Microsoft has settled class action lawsuits in California. Under the settlement terms, people and businesses that purchased Microsoft software between February 18, 1995 and December 15, 2001 in California may be eligible to obtain vouchers that you can use toward new software and hardware purchases. The settlement is estimated to be worth $1.1 billion. Unclaimed vouchers will be split between California schools and Microsoft. Claim forms are due by March 15, 2004. For information and claim forms, go to the official web site at http://www.microsoftcalsettlement.com. This is the only official site and claims submitted through other sites, such as Lindows.com's http://www.msfreepc.com/ web site have been ruled invalid by the court.
Settlements of class action lawsuits have also been proposed or reached in other states, such as Florida, Kansas, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. For information on these settlements, as well as the California settlement, see Microsoft's Consumer Class Action Settlement Information web site.
